Inter – Agency Service Support in Search Management 08/10/2016

18 October 2016

Background:

One of the main services provided by Voluntary Emergency Services (VES) is Missing Persons Search. The instances of VES assisting An Garda Siochana are almost a weekly occurrence, and are becoming even more frequent. There has certainly been a greater awareness among the PRA’s of the ability, expertise and resources VES can provide and which we all continue to develop.

Kerry Civil Defence hosted a Service Support in Search Management with the support elements of Dogs and the use of Tetra Communications utilising the Command Vehicles which builds on our ongoing work with An Garda Siochana, Health Services Executive, Coastguard and Local Authority. The event afforded Civil Defence an opportunity to discuss the Command and Structure for a Missing Person Operation to An Garda Siochana on the capability and resources in a Missing Persons scenario.

The aim of the exercise afforded an opportunity for VES – Drone Operators to:

  • demonstrate the skills in the management of a search
  • work with local Gardaí during the management of a Missing Person search
  • demonstrate excellent communication skills
  • deal with an evolving scenario/s

Communications Operators to:

  • demonstrate the skills in the management of a search with the MEM van
  • work with local Gardaí during the management of a Missing Person search
  • demonstrate Tetra communication skills
  • deal with an evolving scenario/s

Dog Handlers to:

  • demonstrate working as a team
  • demonstrate effective communications
  • demonstrate effective search skills
