Civil Defence Severe Weather Response (12th February – 13th February 2014)

1. Kerry
Civil Defence had 23 volunteer members deployed, with 4 4WD Jeeps and 2 Ambulances tasked with the transfer of patients from a Nursing Home in Killarney to hotels and B&Bs in the area due to a loss of power in the home, assisting with the removal of animals from an Equestrian Centre in Castleisland which was being used as an animal shelter, assisting with traffic control in Tralee and sandbagging in the Tralee area.

2. Laois
Civil Defence had 28 volunteer members deployed, utilising 6 4WD Jeeps, 1 Van, 1 Minibus and 1 Fire Appliance. The unit acted as back-up to the Fire Service from 2pm – 9.30pm. The volunteers were tasked with road traffic control for the Fire Service throughout the county due to multiple instances of fallen trees and flooded roads, sandbagging in the Mountrath area and monitoring of the River Nore which continued this morning, 13th February.
3. Kilkenny
As a result of a major emergency being declared in Kilkenny Civil Defence had 15 volunteers deployed from 6pm – 2am utilising 4WD Jeeps, 1 Contol Unit and 1 Ambulance, tasked with assisting Gardaí with traffic management at strategic points throughout the city.
4. Clare
Civil Defence had 17 volunteer members deployed from 5pm – 11pm in the Ennis and Newmarket areas utilising 2 4WD Jeeps, 1 Minibus, 1 Fire Appliance and 1 Van tasked with removal of trees and debris which were blocking roads and traffic control.
5. Waterford County
Civil Defence had 18 volunteers utilising 3 4WD vehicles and 1 Ambulance tasked with traffic control at four locations. They also assisted stricken homeowners
6. Limerick City & County
Civil Defence provided ambulances (Limerick City 2, Limerick County 1) to assist the HSE Ambulance Corps with transfer of patients from Regional Hospitals to various destinations around Limerick and Ennis.
7. North Tipperary
Civil Defence had four members deployed to assist with traffic management while local authority crews cleared a number of fallen trees on the Thurles-Nenagh road.
8. Carlow
Civil Defence deployed to assist homeowners who had lost power – used 4WDs to transport homeowners to fill oxygen cylinders.

Civil Defence Units remain on standby to assist as required. Civil Defence has 4,500 volunteers based in every Local Authority area in the country. Civil Defence has a wide range of equipment to deal with flooding including 88 Boats, 47 Fire Tenders, 9 Floating Pontoon Units and 130 Four Wheel Drive vehicles.
