Waterford County Civil Defence – Sean Kelly Cycle Tour – August 2012

On Sunday the 26th August Waterford County Civil Defence were activated to provide Medical Control Coordination, First Aid and Ambulance Cover for the Seán Kelly Cycle Tour.

The Seán Kelly Tour is a leisure cycle event designed to promote the cycling tour opportunities of Waterford County and to pay tribute to Seán Kelly who learned his trade on the County Waterford roads.

This year’s event saw over 5000 riders taking part. With the number of participants almost doubled from 2011 it was a challenge for Waterford County Civil Defence to deal with and coordinate the response to any medical issues that arose out of the event. The numbers of participants stretched out over the 3 different courses of 50, 100 and 160kms was a logistical difficulty for the Civil Defence resources available on the day. The professionalism and dedication of the Waterford County Civil Defence volunteers made the event run smoothly. Each incident was managed with care and attention and the riders were kept on the move.

Waterford County Civil Defence volunteers were congratulated on the day for providing such professional cover and for their dedication over the 12 hour period. Civil Defence presence on the ground made the event safer and enjoyable for all involved.
