Roscommon Boat Crew Activities – August 2019
20 August 2019
Roscommon Civil Defence Boat crew had a busy week with three calls for assistance between Tuesday 13th August and Sunday 18th August.
The first call was received on Tuesday 13th August when a local farmer in the Fearagh, Dysart area had difficulty reaching seven marooned horses. He had failed over the weekend to access his farmland and was concerned for their safety as the River Suck tributaries were rising in the area. The Roscommon Civil Defence Boat Crew responded and all ended well when the horses and farmer were reunited on dry ground at teatime on Wednesday evening. The family were very appreciative of the efforts and response of the crew involved in the operation.
At lunchtime on Saturday 17th August Civil Defence Officer Fergal Conroy received a call from Camp West Control for assistance with a cruiser in difficulty with engine failure in the Tarmonbarry area on the River Shannon. Again our dedicated Crew responded to the call and assisted in securing the Cruiser safely.
A similar call was received at 7 pm on Sunday evening 18th August. On this occasion MRSC Malin Head contacted the Civil Defence Officer requesting assistance for a cruiser with engine difficulties at the weir near Roosky Lock. The crew once again responded to the call and again a happy boat owner was relieved to see the boat crew arrive on scene and assist with securing the cruiser for the night from the risk of drifting to the weir.
