Offaly Civil Defence Search Activity – November 2012

Offaly Civil Defence was activated on Monday 5th November by Garda Regional Search Manager, Sgt. Tom Dully to assist in a search for a missing 17 year old youth in the Ferbane / Belmont area of County Offaly. Civil Defence Officer, Raphael Fallon assembled a team of 10 fully equipped Civil Defence Volunteer searchers to assist the Gardaí. As the youth had been seen in close proximity to the River Brosna the previous night, an extensive search of the riverbank, and surrounding fields, was conducted by Civil Defence search teams after having the search plan discussed between the two Services.

The Civil Defence Officer maintained regular contact with the Gardaí during the course of the day, moving the search pattern as required with GPS positions marked accordingly. Just before 5pm the Civil Defence Officer received confirmation from Sgt. Dully that the Garda Underwater Unit had recovered a body in the River Brosna. Civil Defence search teams made their way back to the rendezvous point to meet up with the Gardaí where a “Hot De-brief” was conducted concerning the operation. The Civil Defence team were thanked for their assistance and co-operation by the Gardai, and stood down at 6pm
