North Tipperary Civil Defence Cover XL Challenge and Rescue Hiker
On Saturday 6th April North Tipperary Civil Defence provided first aid and rescue cover for the XL Challenge, which was held in the Keeper Hill & Silvermines area. The event consisted of 4 hikes catering for all abilities and levels of fitness. Two of the hikes included summiting Keeper Hill & the Silvermines Mountain. As part of the duty Civil Defence members accompanied each hiking group while a rescue team was on standby in case of an incident.
The services of Civil Defence were utilised when a hiker injured her ankle on Keeper Hill. Civil Defence members administered first aid while a rescue team were dispatched to the location. The person was brought by stretcher for appox 2km to a Civil Defence 4×4 vehicle and returned to the event start/finish area where arrangement for transport to her local A&E were made with her colleagues. The event and rescue situation was controlled from the Civil Defence mobile communications vehicle utilising GPS enabled radios and digital mapping software.
