Laois Civil Defence – Search & Rescue Activity – January 2013

On Sunday evening 6th January 2013 Laois Civil Defence were requested by Gardaí in Clonaslee Garda Station to assist in the search for a walking party of three people. The walking party had not returned from their walk having left Glenbarrow Cark Park at approx 2.30pm. They had been in contact with Gardaí and were unsure of their location in the Glen Barrow Ridge of Capard . At this stage of the evening light was fading and weather conditions were cold wet and windy with mist descending on the mountain side.

Laois Civil Defence activated all necessary resources and placed other members on stand- by via the text call out system in the event that further assistance was required in the search operation. Maps of the area were examined at the Laois Civil Defence Mountmellick base. The lost family were contacted by mobile phone and from the information received two 4×4 Jeeps were dispatched to Glenbarrow Car Park to conduct a search of forestry road ways in the Glenbarrow, Coen, and Ridge of Capard area. The Jeeps conducted road searches from approx 6.40pm and shortly thereafter the missing persons phoned to inform the search party that they had seen lights of the jeep flashing on an adjacent roadway lower down in the valley. The search was re-directed accordingly and a short time later the missing family were located and returned to their car located in Glen Barrow Car Park.

The family were most appreciative of the professional manner in which the operation was carried out and particularly the quick response to the incident. The Gardaí also expressed their gratitude to Laois Civil Defence for another successful mission.
