Kerry Civil Defence – 4X4 Driving Course

23 February 2016

Kerry Civil Defence attended a 4×4 driving course recently at which six of the units key members gained invaluable experience and knowledge for driving 4×4 vehicles across different terrain. The course was designed with Civil Defence operational activities in mind.

The course objectives that discussed with Millbrook Off Road Centre for the selected drivers was to identify risks associated with using a 4×4 vehicle off road, prepare the vehicle for use off-road, drive over a variety of terrain, perform an on-site risk assessment, identify the loading/towing capacities, identify the dangers of vehicle self recovery and the legal and practical requirements for travelling on a public road.

Kerry Civil Defence provided the following selection of students:

  • the CDO attended on the management side to see first-hand the difficulties a driver might go through in these difficult terrain conditions,
  • the ADI because of classroom workshops to pass on to other volunteers who may operate 4×4 vehicles,
  • the Transport Officer
  • and two other senior drivers within the local organisation.

There was a good standard of variation between classroom work and practical driving on site.

All students are assessed after the course by way of a practical assessment with one to one on the designed course.

All successful students are awarded Fetac 6 level Certificate by Lantra. The students on the course were full of praise and stated it was long overdue.
