Galway Civil Defence – Search Operation – February 2013

On the evening of the 18th February 2013 Galway Civil Defence was contacted by An Garda Síochána to assist in the search for a missing person from the city area. The man was reported missing by family members over the weekend.

The Galway Civil Defence Oranmore Unit was mobilised on Tuesday 19th February and after high tide a search of the coastline was conducted by 16 Volunteer members under the guidance of Commander Louie Casserly. During the course of the week, an area from Oranmore Castle to Kinvara foreshore was searched. A large number of the Oranmore Unit turned out each day. On Thursday 21st February, the Galway City Boat Unit searched the inlets and canals leading from the River Corrib. The banks of the river were also searched by the boat crews.

On Sunday 24th February 2013 a larger search was conducted with An Garda Síochána. Members from the City unit assisted the Oranmore unit with the coastal search and a boat crew searched a number of small islands off the shore. Approximately 30 Civil Defence Volunteers assisted.

The search is currently ongoing.
