Cork West CD – Annual Training Camp on Bere Island -18th & 19th of September 2021

30 September 2021

The camp was attended by: Cork West CDO & ACO; 35 Cork West Volunteers and 5 extraordinary guest speakers.

After a long and busy 18 months of Covid-19, the theme of this year’s camp was ‘Team Building’ and ‘Communication’. While volunteers have been busy completing individual tasks throughout Covid-19, the aim of the camp was to encourage volunteers to embrace working within a team, to focus on their individual communication skills and to break down any reservations relating to social interaction resulting from numerous lock-downs and enforced isolation from others.

Professor Conor Deasy, Prof of Emergency Medicine UCC/CUH, gave a fascinating and captivating talk on ‘Thinking Under Pressure’.

Mr. Kieran Henry, Senior Lecturer in Emergency Care Education, UCC, gave an insightful, and thought-provoking talk on ‘Virtues of A Team Player’.

Dr Tony Lynch, Clinic Lead for Affidea Express Care, gave an intriguing, humorous and eye-opening talk on ‘Neurological Emergencies’.

Dr Jason Van Der Velde, Medical Director and Founder of West Cork Rapid Response gave a fascinating and extraordinary practical lesson on ‘7 Ways to Die in Water’.

Mr. Stephen Maguire, Smart Performance, held a Team Building and Communication workshop which was highly entertaining and certainly thought provoking.

Cork West Medical Instructors Mick Lynch & Garry Minihane conducted Medical Skills Workshops for the volunteers, and Cork West Communications Instructor Anna O’Sullivan completed some refresher training on the DMR Portable Radios.

A wonderful and interesting weekend was had by all.

Massive thanks to all Guest Speakers, Cork West Civil Defence Instructors, and each Cork West Civil Defence Volunteer for yet again giving up their time and attending the Training Camp.

Well done to all.
