Cork County Council Civil Defence Presentation Night – November 2013

Members of Cork North, South and West Civil Defence Units were presented with Certificates and Long Service Awards at the Park Inn by Radisson, Cork Airport on Friday 22nd November 2013. In attendance to present the awards were County Mayor Cllr. Noel O’Connor and Chief Fire Officer Seamus Coughlan.

Mayor Noel O’Connor commended the volunteers for the work that they do and the support that they provide to the community on a local and national basis. He advised that he was proud to be asked to present the awards and feels that Civil Defence is a very valuable asset due to the variety of training and exercises that are conducted regularly to give the volunteers experience to support community events. He especially praised the great work done by Civil Defence in Cork County in recent years in dealing with adverse weather and flooding and the tremendous support to the community at various events.

Seamus Coughlan thanked the volunteers for their time, effort and dedication to the organisation. He suggested that Civil Defence is becoming more recognised by the Principal Response Agencies in recent years as a result of improvements in equipment and training. He wished the volunteers well for the future and said that he hoped to see further progression of the good image and reputation of the organisation in the coming years.

A total of 205 Certificates were presented at the ceremony in the following skills: Cardiac First Responder, Occupational First Aid, Emergency First Responder, Search Management & Field Search Skills, National Powerboat, Manual Handling and Manual Handling People Moving.

Long Service Awards were awarded to 62 Volunteers, having served in excess of 1,500 years between them.
