Programme Overview

Target Audience: Civil Defence Volunteers

The purpose of this programme is to equip Civil Defence Instructors with the knowledge, skill and competence required to design, deliver and evaluate manual handling training. Successful particpants are awarded a QQI Level 6 Component Certificate enabling them to deliver training to volunteers at a local level within the Civil Defence structure.

Participation in this programme ensures that instructors can effectively develop and tailor manual handling to meet and address the various environments in which volunteers operate. An important component of the programme is the use of Dynamic Risk Assessment and T.I.L.E; all features of the course which address the requirements of the Heath & Safety Authority of Ireland.

QQI-AWARD-LOGO%20(140kb)The programme consists of 6 modules delivered over 154 hours through class contact and self-directed learning:

1. Legislative requirements
2. Anatomy and back care
3. Ergonomic principles and risk assessment
4. Manual handling principles and techniques
5. Planning and design of manual handling training programmes
6. Delivery of manual handling training

Each participant is required to undertake a three part assessment. The assessment consists of a theory examination, presentation / instruction of manual handling techniques and a written assignment. All three assessments require a minimum mark to successfully complete the programme.
