Storm Éowyn – January 2025

Civil Defence Units countrywide have been on standby for deployment since Wednesday 22nd January to assist PRAs and communities in the wake of Storm Éowyn which wreaked havoc across the country on Friday 24th January.

Deployments commenced on Wednesday 22nd January. Volunteers have been activated across a total of 21 local authority areas:

 Westmeath:

Supplied Westmeath County Fire Service with beds, sleeping bags and sleeping bag liners for four Fire Stations.

Supplied and set up bedding in Emergency Management Centre.

Delivered meals to isolated households.

Collected mobile phones from homes for charging.

Attending Community Response Forum meetings.

Conducting welfare checks on vulnerable households.

Tipperary:

Attending SWAT team meetings and Crisis Management team meetings.

Conducted welfare checks on vulnerable people, without power, isolated due to fallen trees.

CD HQ made available for showers, charging of devices etc.

Meath:

Attending SWAT team meetings.

Attending LCG and NECC meetings.
Prepared equipment for Emergency Accommodation Centre for homeless.

Checked routes for hazardous debris in support of area engineers.

Assisted Cavan Civil Defence with delivery of hot meals to retirement village.

Preparing to assist Uisce Éireann with distribution of water.

Provided Generators to two vulnerable families to run water pumps for sanitary and heating purposes.

Delivering bottled water to homes on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Conducting welfare checks on vulnerable people.

Dublin:

Attended SWAT team meetings.

Transported Water Tanker and 5 Generators to Monaghan Fire Station.

Transported 6 Generators to Lifford, Donegal.

Laois:

Attended SWAT team meetings.

Assisted Housing Section with planning for Rest Centres.

Assisted with setting up of CMT and MEM rooms at County Hall.

Set up 6 Emergency Rest Centres across the county.

Assisted in setting up local coordination centre.

Provided information management assistance (5 members) in local coordination centre.

Assisted ESB and Uisce Éireann with access and transport.

Provided drone support to ESB network crew.

Delivered 2 Generators to Roscommon County Council.

Donegal:

Attending SWAT team meetings.

Attending NDFEM meetings.

Attending NECG meetings.

Attending Community Forum meetings.

Made one home support transportation.

Assisted with one medical intervention.

Conducted welfare check on elderly living alone in Finn Valley area.

Provided care on site to elderly person with health issues, who was without electricity.

Delivered fuel to four houses in remote area of Strabane, who were without power.

Assisted with establishment of Community Forum.

Conducted welfare checks on 14 houses of persons living alone in Killygordon, Donegal, Aghyaran and Castlederg (Tyrone).

Humanitarian assistance to 90 year old, without water, electricity or heating.

Transfer of Generators from Dublin to Donegal County Council.

Donegal CD HQ open to public for showers, washing/drying clothes, Wifi, charging of devices, hot food etc.

Delivered Generators received from Dublin CD to Donegal County Council.

Conducted welfare check on 2 vulnerable adults and 1 disabled teenager in Lifford.

Conducted welfare checks on 2 vulnerable adults and 1diabetic patient in Killybegs.

Conducted welfare check to vulnerable household in Malinbeg and supplied Generator to power a fridge with essential medicines.

Conducted welfare check on 2 elderly residents in Glenties, lit fire, supplied fuel and groceries.

Transported cancer patient from home in Laghy (no electricity, no heating) to hotel.

Delivered groceries and medication to 88 year old in Mountcharles.

Delivered Generator to west Donegal home.

Transported lady from Magheraroarty to Dungloe nursing home.

Conducted welfare checks on vulnerable households in Inishowen Carndonagh and Glentougher – connected Generator for 1 household.

Mayo:

Attending SWAT team meetings.

Set-up Rest Centre to accommodate 15 people.

Assisted a vulnerable elderly lady with charging of her essential medical equipment.

Drone team assisted ESB networks crew.

Attending Community Response Forum meetings.

Assisted Galway Civil Defence with transfer of equipment from Ballina to Glanamaddy.

Transported elderly members of Knock community to access their Community Hub.

Delivering bottled water, hot meals and essential supplies to impacted residents.

Conducting numerous welfare checks (38 to date) to vulnerable people via Community Response Forum.

Longford:

Attending Crisis Management Team meetings.

Attending Community Response Forum meetings.

Treated person with minor arm injury.

Assessed local park for damage on behalf of local authority.

Distributed emergency diesel supplies for generator at council building.

Opened park for ESB networks.

Transported family in distress to hotel accommodation.

Delivered bottled water to nursing homes and vulnerable persons for Uisce Éireann.

Delivered ‘Meals on Wheels’to community guards who are aiding distribution.

Delivering bottled water to Community Hubs.

Conducting welfare checks to vulnerable people and delivering humanitarian aid.

Offaly:

Attending SWAT team meetings.

Attending NECG meetings.

Distributed camp beds to assist homeless.

Clare:

Attending SWAT team meetings.

Assisted family to access their home following damage due to fallen trees.

Drone team mobilised to assess roads for ESB crews.

Drone teams assisted ESB crews with assessments of downed cables.

Conducting welfare checks (10 to date) on vulnerable people.

Drone teams assisted ESB Networks crews in Galway and in Clare.

Assisted AGS to gain access to an isolated household.

Conducting welfare checks on vulnerable people, tasked via community helpline.

Control Room set up at CD HQ.

Delivering bottled water and supplies to Community Response Hubs.

Wexford:

Attending SWAT meetings.

Provided beds for homeless.

Provided generators and emergency lights to LCC.

Tetra Radios made available for emergency back-up.

CD HQ manned with access to devices charging, washing machine and dryer etc.

Kilkenny:

Attended Crisis Management Team meetings.

Set up emergency shelter with capacity for 20.

Provided beds for homeless services and St Luke’s hospital.

Supported local authority with Comms.

Manning emergency phones for local authority.

Monaghan:

Transported a member of County Council staff to work.

Attended Crisis Management Team meeting and Local Resilience meeting.

Stored 20 pallets of drinking water for Uisce Éireann, to supply Nursing Homes and vulnerable people.

Delivered water to Monaghan hospital and to care homes around the county.

Drone Team assisting ESB network team for sustained period.

Delivered water to 7 Rest Centres.

Delivered portable Generators and battery operated radios for vulnerable people.

Transported childen from closed schools into Monaghan town and back.

Delivered 12KW Generator to school for connection by electrician.

Carlow:

Galway:

Attended NDFEM and Crisis Management Team (CMT) and Community Forum meetings.

Transported person with mobility issues from Merlin Park hospital to Ballinasloe.

Conducted welfare check on patient for ALONE in Ballinasloe.

Collected Generator for Community Hub in Glenamaddy.

Drone Team assisting ESB networks crew in Connemara.

Transported Generators to Community Hubs as required.

Transported family from north Galway to hotel accommodation.

Transported Generator on behalf of Galway County Council.

Cork West:

Cavan:

Distributed 30 hot meals to elderly people in retirement village who were without power.

Assisted with setting up of Community Forum.

Opened CD HQ to persons wishing to avail of Internet, have hot drink, and heat.

Conducted welfare check on vulnerable persons with disabilities, without power or water.

Delivered water and groceries to vulnerable persons, without power or water.

Conducted welfare checks on families in Bailebrough and Butlersbridge, delivered water and torches.

 Sligo:

Attended meeting with Chief Fire Officer.

Attending SWAT team meetings.

Delivered camp beds to Fire Station in pre for overnight stay, if required.

Provided warm drinks, charging capabilities and distributing water from Community hubs in Geevagh and Castlebaldwin.

Welfare packs put together and transported for storage.

Collection of batteries and lighting for welfare distribution.

Conducted welfare checks and delivered packs to vulnerable households.

Delivered bottled water to 6 Community Hubs.

Delivered 40 welfare packs to Community Hubs.

Limerick:

Leitrim:

Attending multi agency Community Forum meetings.

Provided camp beds, pillows and sleeping bags to Fire Service for staff staying overnight in Fire Stations.

Cleared a blocked entrance lane to isolated home.

Distributed water in sealed containers to 7 Community Hubs.

Delivered bottled water to Community Hubs.

Sourcing essential contents for care packs and distributing to vulnerable people.

Louth:
