Sligo Search & Recovery

Sligo Civil Defence was activated by An Garda Síochána on Sunday afternoon 5th March to provide assistance with a search for a man missing since 12th February.

Seven Civil Defence volunteers assisted with the search on Monday morning, 6th March. The assistance of the SUA (drones) unit from Donegal was requested and the team arrived on site at 3pm. However, due to a sudden change in the weather conditions they were unable to become airborne.

Six Civil Defence volunteers assisted with the resumption of the search on Tuesday, 7th March.

On Wednesday, 8th March the K9 (dog) unit was deployed to lend assistance.

On Thursday, 9th March five volunteers again joined the search. At 5pm the helicopter combed the area and the top of Benbulben mountain and the man’s body was spotted and removed with the assistance of mountain rescue and the search concluded.

Gardaí, Sgt Moylan and Sgt Mc Mahon thanked the volunteers for turning out in such numbers, especially given the dreadful weather conditions and the SUA team from Donegal for their prompt response.
