Manual Handling Instructor Course
2 February 2015
An Instructing Manual Handling Course is currently being hosted at the Civil Defence College. Students are undertaking a Risk Assessment Exercise of hazards ranging in scale and consequence. The exercise was setup to mirror objects likely to be encountered in a variety of environments and is a move away from the “Empty A4 Box” model.
This is a new approach to teaching the Risk Assessment Module where students apply learning through discovery as opposed to the Chalk & Talk method creating in turn a deeper individual understanding of the dynamic risk assessment process.
With students from Civil Defence, An Garda Síochána, the National Ambulance Service and the Department of Defence a great deal of discussion and shared learning is taking place. One of the key aims for all participants is to create an environment where all services could align their Manual Handling Operator Training to a National Standard. With this in mind students on successful completion of the instructors programme (final assessments this Thursday, 5th February…. so wish them luck!) will receive a QQI Level 6 Award in Instructing Manual Handling (QQI Code 6N0233).
