Laois Civil Defence – Opening of New Premises at Mountmellick – February 2012
20 February 2012
Laois Civil Defence received a huge boost on Friday 17th February with the official opening of the new premises at Mountmellick by Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Mr Alan Shatter, T.D.
The interior of the unit is fited out to a very high standard – all completed using the units own resources. The premises are a fit- for- purpose structure with a mezzanine floor over part of the interior, housing a training room, kitchenette and office/radio control room.
The new premises provides Laois Civil Defence with a very effective emergency response centre, with secure storage and training facilities, which will of great benefit to the town of Mountmellick which has traditionally been prone to flooding. The premises is also within 15 minutes of the Slieve Bloom Mountains which will reduce the response time in the event of future call outs to assist with search and rescue operations.
Following the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the opening Minister Shatter toured the facility and met with the Volunteer members of the Unit, two of whom (Fergal Conroy and Seamus Clancy) received 20-year long service medals on the day. Laois Civil Defence Welfare Unit provided refreshments to the invited guests.
