Downpatrick Head Cave Rescue – 17th/18th September

Mayo Civil Defence was requested by An Garda Siochana at 21.45h on the 17/9/22 to assist with a multi agency rescue operation at Downpatrick Head in North Mayo.
A person had become trapped in a sea cave at the location.
Civil Defence provided a drone unit, tentage, lighting and logistical support to the 23 hour operation.
The incident involved An Garda Siochana, The National Ambulance Service, Mayo Fire & Rescue, Civil Defence, Irish Coast Guard, IRCG Helicopter Rescue 118 (Sligo), Ballyglass RNLI, Garda Water Unit, The Irish Cave Rescue Organisation.
At approximately 16.00h on 18/9/22 the casualty was recovered by the Cave Rescue personnel and removed to Rescue 118 for transfer to Sligo University Hospital for medical evaluation.
Garda Superintendent Gabriel Moran complemented all the responding services and said all those involved in the rescue effort had helped save a life.
He paid particular tribute to the effort of locals around the Ballycastle area, who provided assistance and sustenance to rescue workers, last evening, overnight and throughout the day.
