Civil Defence Involvement in Giro D’Italia 2014

Giro D’Italia Cycle Race

The Giro D’Italia officially started on Friday 9th May with a 21km team time trial in the city of Belfast. Saturday’s second stage, a 219km test of rolling roads and gusting winds on the Antrim coastline started and finished in Belfast, while Sunday’s 187km stage began in Armagh and travelled south to Dublin’s Merrion Street.

Summary of Civil Defence Involvement
Sunday 11th May, 2014
· Over 400 Volunteers on duty from the Border to Merrion Square, Dublin

· Equipment in use: 16 Ambulances, 4 Boats, Mini Buses for Transport and Catering Vehicles
· Provided Medical Cover in towns along route and the Communications Link to Civil Defence Control
Merrion Square and Garda Control in Pearse Street, Dublin which was acknowledged by the PRAs as vital
to the smooth running of the event
· 4 Command Vehicles – Tetra, UHF and VHF radios in use
· Assistant Civil Defence Officer Aidan Hanna travelled with Giro along the route in company of HSE

· Emergency Reserve: Dublin City – 2 groups of 40 Volunteers on standby to assist Gardaí
· Counties Involved: Galway, Offaly, Kilkenny, Monaghan, Louth, Meath, Cavan, Kildare and Dublin

· Dublin and Kildare Welfare Units provided breakfast and lunch packs for participating Volunteers.
