Wexford Civil Defence held a commemorative dinner to mark the 75th anniversary of the organisation’s establishment in the county. The event took place at the Riverbank House Hotel and was attended by volunteers from the Enniscorthy, Gorey, New Ross, and Wexford Units, reflecting the strong countywide commitment to community service.

The occasion was honoured by the presence of several distinguished guests, including the Leas Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Oliver Walsh; Cllr. Ger Carthy; Chief Executive of Wexford County Council, Mr. Eddie Taaffe; Cep Carty from the Civil Defence Branch; and Wexford’s Chief Fire Officer, Mr. Alan O’Neil.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of Long Service Medals, recognising the exceptional dedication and service of volunteers:

  • 20 Years’ Service: Danny Meaney
  • 10 Years’ Service: Daniel Kowalski

Speaking at the event, the Leas Cathaoirleach commended the volunteers for their longstanding support of local communities and Primary Response Agencies, noting the vital role Civil Defence plays in emergency response, public safety operations, and community events.

Cllr. He highlighted this collaboration as a testament to the strength of volunteer-led emergency and medical support services in the county.

Civil Defence Officer, speaking on behalf of the organisation, thanked all volunteers for their dedication, compassion, and willingness to respond whenever called upon, stating:

“The work carried out by our volunteers, often quietly and without recognition, makes Wexford Civil Defence something we can all be deeply proud of. Their commitment to serving others represents the very best of our community.”

The event concluded with warm acknowledgement of the past 75 years of service and a reaffirmation of Wexford Civil Defence’s mission to support and protect communities in times of need.
