Wicklow Civil Defence Activities During The Big Freeze

As part of the County Council’s Major Emergency Plan, Civil Defence were activated in accordance with the Protocols of the Plan.

Contact was made with the HSE and Gardai to establish Inter-agency Co-operation. As a result of this, Civil Defence responded to 25 calls, mainly from the HSE, to assist in the following areas:

To maintain staff levels at St Colman’s Hospital, Rathdrum
To maintain staff levels at Sunbeam House, Rathdrum
To maintain staff levels at Wicklow Hospital
To assist District Nurses throughout the County to access patients
To assist in Patient Transfers
To transport Care Workers to Clients
To assist people with supplies and to
Monitor isolated people.

To date, some of these tasks are on-going and the organization remains on an Operational Footing.

Throughout the operation, Civil Defence operated seven four-wheel drive vehicles and were successful in accessing most of the County. The whole operation was controlled from County Buildings, Wicklow, as per the MEP.
