Sligo Civil Defence - St Patrick's Day 2009

Sligo Civil Defence participated in 4 St. Patrick’s Day parades this year.

At the Sligo City (12 noon) and Enniscrone (2 pm) parades a number of Civil Defence volunteers assisted with first aid while another group of volunteers demonstrated the various skills of Civil Defence in addition to showcasing a number of vehicles in both parades.

The group split for the Dromore West (4 pm) and Gurrteen (4 pm) parades.

The volunteers were presented with a trophy at the Gurteen parade in recognition of their commitment and dedication to serving the needs of this community for over 40 years. Gurteen Civil Defence unit was set up in Gerry and Beatie Shryanne’s home many years ago. The class occupied their front sitting room and ran up until 2000 when Beatie retired followed by Gerry in 2004. The group H.Q. then moved a few mile to Cloonloo where 17 members are very active at present keeping up the commitment to their community. It was fitting that the community itself recognised their dedication and assistance.

There was great joy among the volunteers and the trophy takes pride of place in the Civil Defence Office.
