Mayo Civil Defence News

Mayo Civil Defence assisted at the formal state ceremony to commemorate the Famine on Sunday 16th May 2010 in Murrisk, Co Mayo.

15 members attended, and assisted with traffic control, stewarding and security.

The event was organised by Department for Community, Equality & Gaeltacht Affairs and attended by Minister Pat Carey TD.

Civil Defence members worked in conjunction with An Garda Siochana, The Defence Forces, The Health Service Executive Ambulance Service, The Order of Malta and Murrisk Development Association to provide a safe and enjoyable day for all those who attended.

National Famine Commeration Day remembereed the millions of people who died or were forced to emigrate in the mid-1800s. The Famine, which was caused by widespread failure of the potato crop in 1845, changed Irish society forever. The country's population fell by a quarter, as around 1m people died of starvation and 1m emigrated. The West, and Mayo in particular, was one of the worst affected areas.
